“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
George Bernard Shaw
Although Bonfire Night passed not without the usual incidents of lunacy, was it just me who wondered if the annual blitz was a bit quieter than usual?
Money is tight as we all know; maybe the local loony tunes are not as free and easy turning precious wads of cash made from puffs of smoke back into puffs of smoke? Sadly, the worst of all tragedies occurred with the death of a young man after firework mayhem in Halifax.
It still amazes me that obtaining fireworks is so easy given the levels of stupidity across society these days.
Clear As The Air
Bradford’s controversial Clean Air Zone has been extensively promoted on local radio over several weeks. The latest ad claims that cars, motorbikes and even sleds can still drive through the zone free of charge. The frequency of the ads suggests that all is not well.
What of the van owner still unsure as to whether they will get clobbered by a charge? Various ads urge you to check if you can drive without a charge. But why would those likely to be impacted even bother with so much choice? Why not just avoid the centre?
If only the ads were as clear as the air? If only this had been thought through rather than implemented as just another money grab?
Tales From The Alottment
As activity grinds to a halt across my back wall on the splendid local allotments, I spotted Greenfingers defiantly lighting his annual stack, like a beacon to light the village.
Anything that looked solid, static and burnable was hurled onto the pyre; it was a good job that Bombastic woke up just in time as he slumbered in the greenhouse, warmed by the late afternoon sun.
After a few dances around the flames, Greenfingers slumped in his deckchair, unpopped a can of John Smiths and dreamt of sunny days and more abundant crops. The gardening year was officially over.
Advice
Although I have the greatest respect for money-saving guru, Martin Lewis, I have to confess that his television shows are a little bit on the hyper side. That said there is a lot of information here as we all look at ways of saving money this winter.
Curiously this week there appeared another sign of the chasm between the haves and have-nots; consider this. Those with savings languishing in bank accounts for years suddenly have choices and savings rates circa 5%.
Those flush and adept enough may well not even feel the increase in energy prices. Just a thought!
Grand Designs
Bradford Council has plans to build thousands of new “homes” in the centre as written about here for many years. Consider this quote from a recent T&A article; Apartments in some areas of Bradford are cheaper to buy than they are to build – according to a local architect.
Once they have knocked down the old Oastler Market with the demolition of Kirkgate to follow you may well see the centre resembling a desert for decades. We’ve been here before.
Footnote
If you previously signed up to receive emails when I posted something new and were wondering why you hadn’t gotten one in a while, the service I used shut down. I was unaware of this until alerted recently – my apologies.
Please sign up using the form below or in the sidebar (this is the advice I have from the Idlelord Tech Dept) and normal service will resume.
