The Master said, “If your conduct is determined solely by considerations of profit you will arouse great resentment.”

As an advocate of the power of beer, I have to admit to being cheered by this statement.
So proclaimed The Sun recently; a study by Austria’s University of Graz found that “mild intoxication” helped participants relax and cleared mental blocks. I resolved to have a pint before I went out to bat next time.
The study leader also found that certain creative activities often require less mental focus and more “spontaneous insight and ‘Aha’ experiences.”
Whatever do they mean?
The Poison of Political Correctness
Same old story, same sick culprits, same sad victims. News from Newcastle last week of the sex-exploitation of young girls had the Establishment quick to sound alarmed and running for cover.
The depressing consensus from those in power was to seek enquiries and studies to try to understand this medieval barbarity. But why pay some old duffer retired judge to tell us what we already know?
The Establishment have known about this depravity for decades, choosing denial, fearful of upsetting “communities” or, in other words, losing their block votes. And so it continues and the innocence of our young is blighted forever.
No amount of hand-wringing by this cowardly lot will ever make up the suffering caused. And we claim to be a civilised society…in who’s language?
In Another Land – More
A few months ago I commented on a plan to blow an extraordinary sum of money on yet another bridge over the Thames. Apparently, fat Boris thought it was a jolly good idea.
News came this week that the project had been scrapped at a cost estimated to be close on £50m of public money. That this sort of waste merits merely a passing comment in the media says a lot about modern Britain.
…an estimated £46.4m of taxpayers’ money – calculated as direct grants of about £26m from the Department of Transport (DfT), around £11m in services in kind from Transport for London (TfL) and the remainder in cancellation costs – has been spent..
How do you blow £50m to achieve nothing and without anybody questioning who has trousered the dosh? It is tantamount to robbery.
Last week I suggested the Dept of Culture’s new £15m fund for the North of England was taking the piss; perhaps my point is reinforced here.
Thank You Pat
Loyal reader Pat Sowden wrote regarding my piece on kids and social media abuse et al. She makes some great points here.
“What worries me is that it becomes an addiction and hard for kids to turn off and come away. As with computer games- the content of many seems to be the shooting and destroying “characters” either cartoon ones or realistic computer generated “people”.
I sat with my two grandsons some time ago while they sat mesmerised at the TV screen wearing their thumbs out on yet another “must have” game. The sun was shining outside but the curtains were drawn for a better picture.
I asked them what they would do if in years to come they were asked by their country to do this for real like their great grandparents did? The brief look they both gave me said it all – I find it incredibly sad.
A total and absolute waste of youth and all the joys being young can bring. As I have become a member of the older generation I have been told occasionally to “Get a life” – I think it’s the youth of today that need to reclaim their life before it’s too late.”
Well said Pat and, with one week left to go of our summer camp at the Villas, anybody still wishing to allow their kids two days of fun contact [email protected]
One Hundred Years Ago
A beautiful poem written by one Emily Denby of Tong Park on the loss of her brother stands out in this week’s excerpts.
Modern Day Greed
I had to pinch myself when I read this piece in the local rag given it’s brazen ignorance of Bradford’s housing needs.
Mr Slimey Ball, a consultant representing Cherry Pick & Sod Off Developments plc, urged Bradford Clowncil to build on every green field it could muster.
The Clowncil spokesman, Cllr Are-You-Shaw, speaking on behalf of the invisible leader, Cllr Hapless away attending a postal voting seminar, promised to focus on those areas where support was needed most i.e. where they don’t vote Labour.
“The key thing is that we now have a Core Strategy in place which will help protect us from unwanted and speculative development.” said Are-You-Shaw conveniently ignoring the building orgy in North Bradford in the last few years.
Consequently, expect plans for 10,000 new homes in Ilkley, Menston and surrounding areas still under the control of Hapless’s Clowncil.
Have a great weekend.
