“If you look for perfection, you’ll never be content.”
Leo Tolstoy
We had a rare visit this week with the appearance of our MP for a photoshoot. He called for Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Police to take greater action over the scourge of nuisance drivers…
It was tempting to wonder where he had been to suddenly raise this issue and, as ever, he missed the point completely.
“Whilst West Yorkshire Police must catch and prosecute…Bradford Council also has a clear role to play in installing better traffic calming measures…” Thank you for clearing that one up.
Like most politicians he went on about what he has done, which amounts to…zip. I suggest he would be better served reading the comments attached to the article which demonstrate a far greater understanding.
No amount of expensive speed humps and 20mph signs are going to dissuade people with intellectual capacities insufficient to push a wheelbarrow. Add contempt for the law and pitiful penalties and you might agree he misses the point.
He would do far better to attempt to exert some influence within the communities that he most certainly garners much of his vote. My experience suggests that there is a clear demographic at play here; if statistics suggest otherwise then I am all ears.
Of course, I was once young but tearing around in a 13 year-old Mini was never going to end well. You had to pump the brakes as if inflating a rubber doll – so I am told; at certain speeds, bits would start to fly off. If you did crash it was probably the last time you would; even if you did survive a parental bashing would surely follow.
The level of arrogant, brainless and dangerous driving around Bradford is ridiculous. It is baffling how morons wreak havoc in cars most can only dream of. I am only slightly comforted that they must all be tax paying citizens generating wealth for the wider economy.
One of the more positive readers’ suggestions was to confiscate and sell the offenders’ cars. Reinvesting this into traffic cops or addressing the horrendous costs of the damage to police cars would be a worthwhile remedy.
Sadly, Hussain wafts an open cheque book on measures that are proven not to work and only serve to hack off the vast majority of law-abiding drivers.
The bloke is clueless.
Not Just Bradford
The Yorkshire Post has contained several letters and articles recently from Harrogate residents and traders aggrieved at their Council’s plans to pedestrianize large parts of the centre. Here is the latest.
Clearly all is not well and yet the issues are similar to Bradford. Councils are overrun by lunatics who think we will all suddenly be cycling up and down dale, presumably with our shopping on our backs.
The main issue is air quality so, of course, these measures will work. That’s because city centres will become ghost towns and footfall will simply shift to retail parks.
Nationally we suffer from decades of under-investment in decent mass transit systems to serve our cities. Just as we do from being a nation dependent on retail. The chickens are coming home to roost.
Motability
As another of an endless list of examples of the anarchy on our roads take a look at the picture above. The story in the T&A – see here for disbelieving eyes – ran as follows with words from the police.
This Motability vehicle was being used without insurance in the Little Horton Lane area. They said that they thought they were insured.
Heard that one before? Aside from the usual, I thought Motability was about little old ladies on walking sticks, in tiny cars, bobbing to the shops. How does a Golf GTD qualify?
This is from the Motability website: Motability is a national charity which can provide Charitable Grants to Scheme customers who would otherwise struggle to afford the mobility solution they need.
Small wonder the country is going tits up.
