“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,”
Winston Churchill
A busy week for those in high office. The clock is ticking…
Work on one of the biggest regeneration projects in Bradford city centre begins next week – although debate over whether it is needed remains.
So ran the latest article concerning One City White Elephant as Hapless, Comical & Co try to convince themselves they are Leeds.
Without any commercial experience, property guru Comical blindly insists: “The intention was never to create a traditional, full plan office space. It was more about flexible workspace which is still needed.”
Meanwhile, around the corner lies broadly the same space which the council have been unable to shift despite asking a tenth of the cost.
Consider too that this is to be funded fully from the public purse. Not a penny of private money is being invested here which demonstrates what the experts – not clueless councillors – think.
Remember the quoted £35m price tag; where do you think it will end up?
Ham Of The Week
A strong recommendation from The Yorkshire Post led me to watch the BBC’s Hidden Assets drama this week, a joint Irish-Belgium production around organised crime and terrorism – more light watching.
As ever it has a maverick law enforcer at the centre (does anybody follow the rules?) and some of the hammiest acting for some time. One scene had me in tears of laughter.
The prime suspect was being hauled in for an interview when two assassins rode up, slower than an e-bike, and bumped him off with precision shots.
Our heroine was not exactly quick out of the blocks but eventually, fired off a few shots as the assailants escaped. Describing it as a professional job caused me to wonder how they missed her.
As they charged towards her she actually ducked a round or two; it was like a bad Irish jig. This is worth watching just for this pure Irish ham alone.
Highway Madness
With the Highway Code updated, motorists across Bradford responded “what Highway Code?” Whoever was persuaded that the changes reflected above are a good idea must have been smoking the local produce.
One bit of good news is that item 5 implies that we will surely see a halt to large swathes of unoccupied cycle lanes, more used by hedgehogs than cyclists.
Head of Cycle Lanes, Line Markings & Lampposts – Cllr Comical – was unrepentant.
“Cycle lanes are the way forward!” he insisted at a press conference held in the middle of one. “Besides, I’ll only have to find other ways of wasting your money. Especially when I am leader!”
Meanwhile there was shocking news – see here.
Young drivers in Bradford rack up more driving licence points than almost any other city – with 514 new drivers in the city holding penalty points on their record per 100,000.
Surely not.
Woke Corner
A pal of mine sent me a clip the other day from Good Morning Britain entitled Are The Wombles Racially Diverse Or A Woke Disaster?
You can watch it here – see You Tube link.
Meanwhile, how about this from Talk Radio. The University of Chester has issued a trigger warning to students reading JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book, claiming it could lead “difficult conversations about gender, race, sexuality, class, and identity”.
And these bright young things will aspire to great things in later life?
The Ever Moving Buck
Poor old Hapless! As the Yorkshire Post commented at the weekend, referring to her and CEO Kersten England: “Others have stepped aside for much less in the not so distant past when personal accountability – and responsibility – still counted.”
She is not alone though as Boris fights for his life, drowning in a lifetime of lies. And even cricket cannot escape.
The sackings this week of the Director of Cricket and England coach were hardly unexpected but what about the man at the top. The pitiful Teflon Tom Harrison remains in post – how?
Hot Air
My local MP, Hot Air Hussain’s response to the recent energy bills price hike was utterly predictable. This is a global issue and there are few easy answers. His is simply subsidise, subsidise.
It is staggering that some 15m customers do not play the market and are, therefore, at the mercy of it. You cannot tell me that a large swathe of these people are incapable of doing a bit more to protect themselves.
Otherwise, turn it down and stick a jumper on.
